Coin Earrings Variations with SuperDuo Beads

  • 11/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • 8/0 seed beads Miyuki "Dark Bronze" (457D)
  • CzechMates "Capri Blue Gold Marbled"
  • SuperDuo beads "Crystal Gold Luster"

Last Christmas I made a bunch of "Coin Earrings" to go with some "Coin Bands" bracelets that I was giving as gifts. I used Deborah Roberti's pattern, which you can buy HERE. Here's a photo of one of the pairs that I made pretty much as directed by the pattern but without the drop bead at the bottom:

I'm just about to start on a large order of several bracelets with a pair of earrings to go with each one. One of the bracelets I will be making is my version of Deb's free "Stacker" pattern, which you can download HERE. My version is called "Linda's Tweaked Stacker" and you can download that free pattern from Deb's site as well, HERE.

This is the bracelet that I will be making:

She wants the earrings to also have CzechMates tile beads in them and "Coin Earrings" was the only pattern I could think of to use. The thing is that the earrings don't have any SuperDuos in them and I thought it would be nice if they did. So, last night I came up with a couple of ways to add SuperDuos to the basic "Coin Earring" design.

For the earring in the first photo, I replaced the 11/0 seed beads in the initial ring of beads with SuperDuo beads. I had to adjust the number of beads that go around the corners and I also went through the outer holes of the SuperDuos later as I went around to reinforce the earring. This one is my favorite of the two.

For the second sample earring, I picked up an 11/0 bead, then a Superduo then another 11/0 bead between each CzechMate tile. This pushed the outer tips of the SuperDuos out more so I added the netting beads on either side of them this time. This one took a little more reinforcing than the first sample to get the earring to have enough structure.

I've only made these two sample earrings so far and I'm looking forward to trying my idea in other colors, perhaps with the SuperDuos in a different color than the seed beads and the CzechMates.

  2. WOW.....just gorgeous. You are so clever. Love the super duo version. I wish I had time to sit and play with a pattern. Maybe this winter when I feel better I can concentrate and take some time to "just play". I really love these earrings. Thanks for the post. I always get happy when I see your post. :-)

    1. I should have been working on the bracelet/earring order but instead I made a few more samples of these last night. My excuse is that I needed to get the instructions written down before I forgot what I'd done. I'll post them on my blog tomorrow.

  3. Thanks for this inspiration! I purchased the pattern as I have a bunch of tile beads I wanted to use for both earrings and bracelets. I like the option of using superduos as I have a ton of those, too. I always enjoy the way you think about patterns and share your thought process.
